CHERYL KIRK NOLL
- Freelance Illustrator
Cheryl Kirk Noll has been illustrating for children for
more than twenty years. She started her career as a fourth
grade
teacher in Smyrna, Delaware, where she lived when she was
growing up. The next year she headed off to art school at
Rhode Island School of Design, and she still lives in Providence
with her husband. She currently teaches at RISD-CE and is
advisor for the Children's Book Illustration certificate
program there.
Cheryl's interest in education is still strong, and she
loves to learn about different times and places when she
works on
a project. She has researched and illustrated stories from
diverse cultures such as the Hmong of southeast Asia, the
Micmac of Canada, and the Han dynasty of ancient China. A
Basket of Bangles is a picture book about women from
Bangladesh who start their own businesses through micro-loans.
She worked on
black and white illustrations for a series published by Scholastic.
Each book in this "Doll Hospital" series tells a tale about
a doll's life from a different time in American history. The
Black Regiment of the American Revolution chronicles
these historic Rhode Island men.
She has also done black and white illustrations for many
activity books, especially science and history for 8-12 year
olds, as well as teacher and parent resource books for younger
children.
Ms. Noll has contributed to many reading, phonics, math,
music and social studies programs for educational publishers
such as Pearson, Houghton-Mifflin, Scott-Foresman and Harcourt-Brace.
She regularly illustrates for magazines like Calliope
and Highlights for Children, and she was a recipient
of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
Magazine Merit Honor award.
