ABOUT Joanne Friar - Illustrator

Joanne Friar has loved to draw pictures ever since she can remember. She grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, an old historic city full of 19th century mills and fishing boats. She attended the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth where she studied illustration and photography and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education. She married and taught high school art for a few years before freelancing while raising her family.

Joanne has been creating art for children's books since the early 90's for the trade and educational markets. She has researched and illustrated history and nature from ancient civilizations to the Great Depression, from wetlands conservation to endangered species. Her books have won awards such as the CBC Notable Social Studies Book, the CBC Outstanding Science Book, and John Burroughs Nature Books for Young Readers.

Joanne is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Picture Book Artists Association. She and her husband are the parents of four children and live in Somerset, Massachusetts.
