ABOUT Joanne Friar - Illustrator

I was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a beautiful, old, seaside city on the south coast.  After receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth, I taught art and photography at New Bedford High School.

Years later, my husband and I moved to the nearby town of Somerset, raising our four children, and I began doing architectural renderings of the historical buildings and homes that are scattered throughout the region.

One summer I took a course in children’s book illustration at my alma mater and the rest, as they say, is history.  I found my niche and in the last 15 years have illustrated many trade and educational books, both fiction and non-fiction.

I have truly been fortunate to grow up in southeastern New England with its strong sense of history and cultural and geographical diversity.  I have also been blessed with an encouraging family and circle of artists that have been a source of inspiration and support.  Finally, I am truly lucky to be able to work in a field where I can do what I like and be paid to do it!
