ABOUT JUDITH MOFFATT
Children's Book Author & Cut Paper Illustrator
I have always been an artist. Before I could read or write
I loved drawing pictures. My parents encouraged my interest
in art; my father was a printer and would bring home beautiful
paper that inspired my earliest creations. When I took a children's
literature course in high school, I knew children's book illustration
was the direction my art would take. In 1990, when I illustrated
my first trade book, this long-time dream was finally realized.
Cut paper is a medium that I find both challenging and expressive.
My paper palette consists of many drawers of colored and textured
surfaces. After selecting the best papers for a subject, I
cut, fold, glue, and layer the shapes into an illustration.
Finally, the illustration is photographed using special lighting
that creates shadows to enhance the 3-dimensional effect.
Speaking at schools and libraries gives me the opportunity
to see children react to my artwork. Watching them attempt
to reach into a page, pluck out an object, or feel the texture
reminds me that I have added an extra element of enjoyment
to the story and illustrations. I am fortunate to have achieved
notoriety in national and international markets for my illustrations.
Since I have begun writing my own children's books, I find
even more exciting possibilities for expressing my ideas.
